Introduction

  • Can lower your medico-legal risk
  • Can improve outcomes for your patients
  • Can improve your efficiency and use of time
  • Can improve consultation satisfaction for you and your patients
  • Uses the techniques recommended in “What’s a good doctor and how do you make one” – BMJ themed edition

Premise

Doctors, nurses and clinical colleagues are increasingly exhorted to improve their communication with patients. Patients, the government, professional bodies and examiners increasingly expect this.

Yet time is short and there is much to do. And how are educators to move away from generalised encouragement or from feedback that is either too bland to be helpful or too blunt to be acceptable?

There is evidence to answer this – the Calgary Cambridge authors in particular have brought it together efficiently. They have developed a highly effective, structured approach to behavioural feedback – suitable for teaching and learning any behaviour e.g. surgical skills, clinical communication, team-working etc.

Course Description

  • Is aimed at trainers & teachers of doctors, nurses or allied clinical professionals
  • Aims to bring participants to working mastery of the Calgary Cambridge framework – for use in their own teaching.
  • Introduces the core elements of the framework and relevant new publications – we are professional communications skills coaches and we keep abreast of the subject
  • Uses video review & rehearsal – the only techniques shown by research to lead to effective learner behaviour change
  • Organises learners into small groups (max 8, ideally 6) for feedback on their consulting skills
  • You will develop your teaching skills with the method by experiencing the process as learners then ..
  • We provide learners with opportunities to teach with the Calgary Cambridge method and obtain feedback on teaching.
  • We can include 1:1 or group teaching practice, as dictated by the needs of the group. We will liaise with you beforehand to identify precise training needs.
