End of Life Care for F1’s (20/4/20)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The fundamental importance of good end of life care has been well documented, however, recent national publications have high-lighted inadequacies in training in this area. For many patients dying in the UK, today care is provided in hospital and the number of inpatient deaths is forecast to climb significantly in future. The demands of providing medical care for these patients by junior doctors will continue to rise.

Doctors commonly manage illness in patients who may be in the last phase of their lives, both as inpatients and outpatients, and decision making about their preferences for treatment and care should routinely be a joint process with patients and their families. Ensuring that this is the normal or default approach, coupled with specific attitudes and skills to manage end-of-life care discussions sensitively and manage symptoms optimally are core attributes of good doctors

Our facilitators will be drawn from different speciality or professional backgrounds, to provide a diversity of input. The programme is based on our experience especially our full day with FY1s & FY2s in HEE EM but is now beginning to be asked for by post CCT doctors.
